What is pine straw?

Pine straw is made up of pine needles, which are used to make mulch for landscaping projects. The pine straw is also great at keeping rot at bay and keeping weeds out of the garden.

Why do we use pine straw in our gardens?

Many people use pine straw to prevent the soil below from losing too much water. It helps to prevent erosion and soil compaction. Although pine straw only lasts for six months, the benefits that are associated with it are enormous:

  • Keeps the soil moist and cool;
  • Pine straw is porous and allows the soil to be easily irrigated by allowing water to seep through; and
  • It is cheap to use, particularly if you are using pine needles from your own trees.

We’d suggest using our mulch calculator to estimate the amount of mulch needed based on your selected area and desired mulch depth.

How to use the pine straw calculator

The pine straw calculator is pretty straightforward. To use our pine straw estimator, follow these steps:

  1. Enter the length and width of the area you wish to cover.
  2. You should now be able to see the number of bales you need to cover the area with three inches of straw.
  3. Our calculator assumes that you will use 1 bale of straw for every 40 square feet. This quantity is enough to ensure 3 inches of straw coverage. However, if you wish to change this quantity, you may do so in the section labeled “Bales per square feet”.

How much is a bale of pine straw?

The price for a bale of pine straw is not set. It mostly depends on the availability of pine straw.

For the longleaf pine straw, which is very scarce and is rarely carried by most stores, the cost can reach up to US $50-$700.

There are other pine straws available for the low price of $17.

How do I calculate how much pine straw I need?

To manually calculate how many bales of pine straw you need, you should follow these steps:

  1. Measure the length and width of the area you wish to cover. For example:

    50 feet × 30 feet

  2. Calculate the area of the land you will cover:

    1500 feet2

  3. Divide the total area by the number of bales per square foot.

    Bales of straw = 1500/40

  4. The figure you get is the number of bales you need for your project:

    37.5 bales of pine straw

We have made the process easier for you by creating a pine straw estimator. Be sure to give it a try.

How do I use pine straw as mulch?

To use the pine straw as mulch, you will need to place it at least 2 to 3 inches thick and about 1 inch away from the tree or plant root. As pine straw breaks down, the earth and the plant receive the nutrients it provides.

You will need to replace the straw at least twice a year, and our calculator will always be available to help you determine how many bales you need if you ever forget.

How many square feet does a bale of straw cover?

A bale of pine straw covers 35 to 40 square feet. We usually use a 2- or 3-inch depth of coverage. This depth affects the area you can cover.

What formula should I use to calculate the numbers of bales of straw I need?

Use this formula to calculate the number of bales of pine straw needed for a project:

Bales of straw = area/ number of bales per unit

Let’s say you have a garden space that is 15 feet long and 30 feet wide. Calculate the number of bales needed to cover the area.

Area = length × width

     = 15 ft × 30 ft

    = 450 ft²

Assuming that we are distributing 1 bale of straw to a 40 feet2 area.

Now, calculate the number of bales of pine straw we will need by dividing the area by the number of square feet a single bale covers.

Number of bales = Area/40

                = 450/40

                = 11.25

So you will need 11.25 pine straw for an area of 450 ft2.

FAQs

What is the recommended depth for pine straw?
Generally, landscaping projects require a pine straw depth of 2"- 3". A 2" layer is considered to be sufficient for light coverings, while a 3" layer is ideal for moisture retention and weed suppression.
How much area does one bale of pine straw cover?
A normal bale of pine straw covers approximately 35-40 ft², depending on how thick you want it to be. The recommended thickness is around 2-3 inches. Another factor that may impact the coverage is the type of pine straw. Long needle pine straws cover more area compared to shorter needle pine straws.
How many pine straw bales do I need for a 82ft² garden?
You will need a little over 2 bales of pine straw to cover your 82 ft² garden. Let’s calculate the exact measurements. The formula to determine the number of bales needed is: Bales = Area / Coverage = 82/40 = 2.05
What is the difference between pine straw and mulch?
Pine straw and mulch are both used to protect the soil and your various landscaping projects. Both help protect soil, retain moisture, and suppress weed growth. They differ in material, cost, and performance. Pine straw is made from fallen pine needles collected from pine trees. It is lightweight, easy to spread, and typically sold in compressed bales. Mulch is made from shredded bark or wood chips. Pine straw needs frequent replenishment, as the needles decompose faster. Wooden mulch lasts longer.
