Our lung nodule growth rate calculator is an effortless way to assess the risk of lung cancer in a nodule found during a medical imaging test.

Read on to find out more details about lung cancer and its treatment, the importance of lung nodule size, and how to use our solitary lung nodule calculator.

We try our best to make our s as precise and reliable as possible. However, this tool can never replace a professional doctor's assessment. If any health condition bothers you, consult a physician.

How to use the lung nodule growth rate calculator?

We created this calculator using the Brock University cancer prediction equation and the paper Probability of Cancer in Pulmonary Nodules Detected on First Screening CT.

The lung nodule risk calculator allows you to easily compute the malignancy risk of a lung lesion in 9 simple steps.

  1. Enter the patient's age - the minimum age to use this calculator is 18 years old.

  2. Choose the patient's sex.

  3. Specify the presence of emphysema:

    • Emphysema is a chronic disease that causes shortness of breath and a cough. Due to this illness, the lungs become pathologically inflated, reducing the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream.
  4. Note the family history of lung cancer:

    • Individuals whose first-line relatives have had lung cancer have a 50% increased chance of developing lung cancer themselves.
  5. Specify the presence of spiculations:

    • Spiculated borders of a lesion.
    • Also called sunburst or corona radiata sign.
  6. Check if the lung nodule is located in the upper lung:

    • A lesion in the upper part of the lung is more likely to be malignant.
  7. Enter the nodule count:

    • The number of nodules found.
  8. Enter the nodule size:

    • The maximum diameter of a nodule, usually given in millimeters (mm).
  9. Input the nodule type.

📍 Your results will include the log of odds and the probability of cancer being detected within 2-4 years of the follow up on the lesion.

Examination of the lungs shouldn't be limited to the pulmonary lesions - assess the overall performance status and the any life-threatening conditions:

How to calculate lung nodule cancer risk?

Our lung nodule growth rate calculator uses the following equations:

Log odds=(0.0287×(Age62))+Sex\+

Log odds=(0.0287×(Age62))+Sex+Family history+Emphysema(5.3854×((10Nodule size)0.51.58113883))+Nodule type+Upper lung(0.0824×(Nodule count4))+Spiculation6.7892

  • This formula is valid both for multiple and solitary pulmonary nodules (SPN).

Our SPN calculator uses the 6 following variables. Each one of them takes different values, depending on the lesion's morphology and the patient's characteristics:

Lung cancer risk & mortality

Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide in both women and men. It is also the most common cause of death among all the cancers.

Currently, the average 5-year survival rate for the localized disease is equal to 56%. If the cancer has already spread, the chances of survival are around 5%.

You need to know that only 16% of lung cancers are diagnosed at an early stage. Early cancer discovery is key - a 1 cm nodule in the right lung can have a 5-years survival rate of up to 90%.

Cigarette smoking is responsible for 80-90% of lung cancers in the United States. Cigarette smoking is also responsible for the majority of head and neck cancers, as well as urinary bladder cancer.
