- Standing versus sitting — which burns more calories?
- How many calories do I burn by standing?
Does standing burn calories?
Standing does burn calories, but not a lot. It has a MET factor of 1.5. The MET is the metabolic equivalent of a task — it tells you how many calories you burn per hour of activity, per one kilogram of your body weight.
How to calculate how many calories I burn standing?
Calories you burn standing can be calculated with the equation:
calories = T × MET × 3.5 × W / (200 × 60)
where:
T— Duration of activity in seconds;W— Your weight in kilograms; andMET— Metabolic equivalent of a task.
As we said before, MET for standing is 1.5, so you can simplify the formula to:
calories = 5.25 × T × W / (200 × 60)
For example, if you weigh 150 pounds and you stand for two hours:
T = 2 hours = 120 minutes = 7200 secondsW = 150 pounds = 68 kilograms
Now, put those values into the equation:
calories = 5.25 × 7200 × 68 / (200 × 60) = 214.2 kcal
